Mariah Pijeaux is about to turn the big 4-0. Although she has always dreamed of becoming a broadcast journalist, she is working as a temporary assistant in Hollywood. She is a tall, striking mother of three with a honeysuckle complexion and a funky hairdo. Physically addicted to her boyfriend, Kareem Washington, an ex-professional basketball player wit the charm and charisma of a politician, Mariah yearns for a more emotionally satisfying relationship. She wants to break free from Kareem's narcissistic patterns, yet his skill at manipulating her mind and body make her feel stuck and controlled. She even attends local relationship seminars in an attempt to escape from her self-defeating patterns in relationships. And then she meets Malik Tolliver. He is a tall, dark man who just happens to be twentyone years old. She tries to resist his charm but is immediately drawn to him. This one, she hopes, will be different.

Told in Mariah's own voice, May December Souls is a moving story of soul-searching and life lessons.

Yes, sweet memories which revisited me while rereading this beautiful romance.

I was first introduced to this story, via paperback form, fifteen years ago. Fifteen years later, upon revisiting this storyline in ebook form, I can emphatically say it is still a resounding 5 star read which has withstood the annals of time. Even with the advent of numerous editing problems, the great storytelling ability of the author shines through. I so enjoyed this, as R&B erotic singer, Ms. Millie Jackson would say, "young man/older woman" May/December love story. It was so invigorating to witness the journey Mariah took to finally love herself before trying to love a man. I specifically fell in love with the journey of finding that very significant other love, in the personage of Malik. As Salt and Pepper would say "what a man, what a man, what a mighty good man"!

If you did not have the pleasure of reading this sweet, sweet romance story fifteen years ago, please do yourself the pleasurable favor and do so now. It is well worth your time and will add joy to your life by the reading.

May December Souls Anniversary Edition edition by Marissa Monteilh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The voice of May December Souls is what knocks you over the most. Mariah, the narrator, is calm, observant, and seems certain of herself even when she's not sure. She's grappling with lots of issues in this book; it's not just the fact that she's digging a guy who is young enough to have once been diapered by her own hands. Mariah is hurting over the lack of a relationship with her father. She and her new lover, Malik, have father-child issues in common. Maybe it's the thing that bonds them, besides the obvious physical attractions.
The most powerful scene deals with Mariah's acceptance of her father's decision to leave when she was a child. Emotional and vivid with an element of healing, the scene makes that necessary connection to its reader, enough to ensure that the author wrote from the depths of her heart, and perhaps her pain.
May December Souls is a recommended read; it's a contemporary novel that will make you laugh, make you feel, and make you think.
I liked the writing and the style of May December Souls, truly, but overall I feel that this has been done before. How many times must we examine the relationships between older women/younger men? They exist, and obviously make great fodder for novels.
Aside from the fact that this is a repeat, I think Ms. Monteilh's freshman endeavor proves that she is on her way to excellent writer status. She captured the heart and soul of Mariah quite well, Mariah's zeal for life, and her expectations and feelings mirror many. I think, that Mariah could continue in a sequel, and THAT hasn't been done before. The characters of this book, are real. You can just feel then permiate through people that you know and you can feel what everybody is going through. Not an easy feat for an author when the ever present temptation is to leave someone undeveloped to further highlight the protagonist. I think Ms. Monteilh is on her way and this book shouldn't be passed up for the story line, but should be explored for its literary development.
This was a very good book. Mariah has problems with love because like many African American women she was raised without a father. Mariah was married to a man that could give her what she needed emotionally but he died, and at the time she was to young to appreciate what she had. Now she's seeking some kind of piece of mind. She wants answers from her father as to why he left, she also wants to know what it feels like to have the everlasting love of a man, something she definitely does not have with her current boyfriend Curt. As she seek answers she find love and support in an unusal place, a younger man. Malik is determinded to show Mariah that "age is nothing but a number" and true love does not come in the form of numbers but from the heart. This book touches on a lot of different issues. I can't help but to wonder if this book is a photocopy of the authors life , there are a lot of similarties between the author and the protagonist of this novel, if it is she's not alone because I saw a lot of my self in this book.
Mariah Pijeaux is knocking on the door of her fortieth birthday and has been dating a man for seven years that refuses to even introduce her to his family, rather less marry her. She is the mother of three; two by a deceased husband and one by a father that maintains sole custody of their son but allows Mariah to see him every other weekend.
Mariah has several girlfriends that are also experiencing relationship "issues" and they decide to go to these hilarious, yet enlightening, relationship seminars where the doctor instructs them on debonding from the [man] they are attached to. The seminars alone make the book worth reading.
While working a temporary job--Mariah still has not found her chosen career either--she finds herself attracted to a much younger man, Malik. Decades younger to be exact. At first, she tries to ignore the chemistry between them but ultimately decides that she doesn't have anything to lose. What follows is an interesting characterization that flips the script on the older man-younger woman scenario. The reaction of her kids, friends, and Mariah herself instigate provocative and stimulating thinking for the reader. Marissa Monteilh has an interesting writing style and those that can appreciate a little humor mixed with a reality check will truly enjoy the novel. I look forward to her next effort.
