Code Name Evangeline is Long Island journalist Carol Pack's debut novel about an unlikely spy who joins the British Secret Intelligence Service to help liberate her brother from the Nazis.

The year is 1936. Political tension is escalating in Europe, as Hitler's troops march into the Rhineland and break the Treaty of Versailles. During a special meeting between Rudolf Hess and a key Nazi strategist, documents outlining a plot to invade Switzerland are stolen, and a British Commander is taken prisoner by the Germans. They use him as a pawn to lure his sister, Victoria Méliès, into helping them retrieve the encrypted documents. But even without them, the Nazis are able to begin launching their deadly scheme, and as its implementation draws closer, the need to keep Victoria's brother alive, fades.

As soon as Victoria said she knew her little dog was Italian because he smelled like salami, I was hooked. The story line turned out to be a little more serious than I expected, given the salami comment, but I soon found myself thoroughly immersed in the heroine's plight to save her brother. I loved the locations: sailing from England on the Queen Mary; seeing a Broadway show from high in the rafters; and rubbing elbows with society both in England and at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. And I loved that Victoria became a spy. How cool is that? But, still, I didn't give anything away. Meanwhile, the Nazi who got her involved in this... this... imbroglio, was racing around Switzerland, trying to poison everyone. I have to admit, I suffered a pang of disappointment when the author killed off a character that I liked, (will not tell you who) but other than that it was a great read.
